Cognac Room at the Biltmore Hotel
506 S. Grand Avenue
Downtown Los Angeles, 90071
Join the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles at our final Cocktails in Historic Places for 2011 in the Cognac Room of the Biltmore Hotel. The Cognac Room is a chic, sleek Deco lounge, located just behind the Gallery Bar – and its Art Deco murals provide the perfect ambience for our year’s end gathering.
The Biltmore was designed by Schultze & Weaver in an inspired mix of styles including Spanish-Italian Renaissance Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Beaux Arts; and its grandeur proved to haughty East Coast Brahmins that Los Angeles had arrived.
The Biltmore Hotel has featured prominently in L.A.’s history since it opened in 1923. The hotel is well known as the site of the original Academy Awards Ceremony, and legend has it that MGM art director Cedric Gibbons sketched the design for the Oscar statue on one of the Biltmore’s linen napkins.
Over the decades the Biltmore has played host to everyone from Will Rogers, John F. Kennedy, and the Beatles to the Black Dahlia, who was spotted in the lobby on her last evening.
