 Avalon Ball 2012

Casino Ballroom
Avalon, CA

Now in it's 10th year, the Avalon Ball is an fantastic journey into the past when Big Bands played for huge audiences which were broadcast to the nation in the Art Deco Casino Ballroom built in 1929 and located in the city of Avalon on Catalina Island.

Completely restored just a few years ago, the ballroom retains its original romantic style--a lavish medley of rose-hued walls, an arching, fifty-foot ceiling with five Tiffany chandeliers, an elevated stage, raised seating areas around the dance floor, and a vintage, full-service bar in back.

This magical night features Master of Ceremonies Maxwell DeMille and an evening of dancing to music from the 1920s and 30s performed by Dean Mora & the Avalon Ball Dance Orchestra. Immerse yourself in glorious Deco opulence gliding across the 10,000 square foot dance floor surrounded by romantic ocean views.

Catalina Museum Silent Film Festival Featuring the Newly Restored Silent Masterpiece: Wings

Saturday, May 2012 – 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Catalina Island Museum’s Silent Film Benefit and view Hollywood’s first blockbuster, the silent screen classic Wings. Set on the front lines of World War I, Wings is perhaps best known for the realism and terrifying thrills of its aerial dogfights, and was awarded the first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929.

Be one of the first to enjoy the newly released, fully restored version of Wings. Paramount Pictures has breathed new life into the silent era’s most epic adventure, with colorized special effects not seen since the film was originally screened. Exhibited in the Avalon Casino’s theater - one of the silent era’s greatest movie palaces - Wings will be accompanied by an original score, performed on the Page pipe organ by Robert D. Salisbury, a master of the instrument. Every detail is in place to re-live the glory days of the silent film like never before!

The Catalina Island Museum is also pleased to announce rare personal appearances by William Wellman, Jr. and Cissy Wellman before the showing of their father’s most famous film. After the performance of Wings please join us for a book signing in the museum’s Harbor Room. Copies of William Wellman, Jr.’s best-selling book about his father’s early life, The Man and his Wings, are on sale now in the Catalina Island Museum Store.
