The Art Deco Society lecture series continues with “Felonious Flappers: Bad Girls of the Art Deco Era followed by a screening of THE LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT (1933) featuring Barbara Stanwyck.
What motivates a woman to become a criminal? Are some women just born bad, or are they driven to commit crimes for, or because of, the men in their lives? Felonious Flappers will explore the lives and crimes of some of the baddest girls in Los Angeles, from actress and writer Dorothy Mackaye to the ironically named Helen Love.
Social historian and writer Joan Renner will present an illustrated lecture which will explore the cases of a few Los Angeles women who found themselves on the wrong side of the law during the Art Deco era.
The Ladies They Talk About
Barbara Stanwyck stars as Nan Taylor, a tough dame busted for bank robbery and sentenced to San Quentin. Barbara Stanwyck shares the screen with Lillian Roth, Preston Foster, and Lyle Talbot. The film features outstanding period music – a mixture of classic blues and jazz tunes. Ladies They Talk About is a 1933 pre-code women in prison film based upon a play by actress, writer, and real life San Quentin inmate, Dorothy Mackaye.
Tickets are $7 for members of ADSLA and American Cinematheque. Regular American Cinematheque prices apply for the general public ($11) and students/seniors ($9) and are available via Fandango, or can be purchased on the day of the event at the door.
